Matson christens Makua ahead of planned 2027 delivery for Pacific services

Matson's October 12 announcement confirms the October 10 christening of Makua at Hanwha Philly Shipyard. The 3,600-TEU vessel is the first of three Jones Act-compliant ships in an approximately $1 billion program serving Hawaii and the China–Long Beach Express network.

Christening is complete; operating capacity is still planned

Makua is scheduled for delivery in Q1 2027, with the next ships planned for Q3 2027 and Q2 2028. The LNG-ready vessels will replace three ships in existing services. Expected reliability and capacity improvements remain company projections, not space already available for booking.

Understanding the update

The original release date is October 12, distinct from the ceremony date and October 19 follow-up coverage.

What it means for drivers and carriers

Pacific shippers should monitor delivery and deployment notices before building future shipping plans around the new vessels.

Questions to consider

  • Has the vessel's delivery and service deployment been confirmed?
