Crowley accepts Venture tug for Los Angeles and Long Beach ship-assist operations

Crowley accepted delivery of Venture, an 82-foot chartered tug intended for ship-assist and escort work at Los Angeles and Long Beach. The U.S.-built vessel adds support capability at the Southern California container gateway, according to the company's October 19 announcement.

Delivered equipment, not a container-capacity forecast

Built by Diversified Marine, Venture uses twin EPA Tier IV-compliant Caterpillar engines with more than 6,000 horsepower and up to 95 tons of bollard pull. Crowley says it will join four sister tugs in its West Coast fleet.

Understanding the update

Harbor support helps vessels maneuver, dock and depart safely. A tug delivery does not by itself establish shorter terminal queues or greater truck-gate capacity.

What it means for drivers and carriers

Importers and drayage carriers should continue using terminal appointments and vessel-specific availability notices when planning container pickups.

Questions to consider

  • Do current terminal notices confirm the container's actual availability?
